I was fired from my first sales job, and I think I'm going to about to get fired tomorrow from my second. I've lined up another sales job and I feel like it's just another 6 months before I'm in the same position again with this one. I've only sold one thing ever and it was periphery to the core product. I'm intelligent, fairly talkative, and have no physical deformaties :D However I truely suck at sales. I hope your site helps. Thanks.

People just need to realize that sales has nothing to do with ego. It has everything to do with empathy, sympathy, and altruism. You have to truly want to help out your clients and they will see you as a huge help.

In Germany we consider a third topic and this is the possibilty, to bring in own ideas and thoughts, that keeps a salesguy motivated. Often tis possibilty is missing in the sales-organisation, or new ideas are not wellcome. This creates frustration.

I agree 100%! There are only two reasons an employee doesn't do what's best for them and the company... First, they don't understand how to do it or Second, they are unwilling to do it. It's the same argument made above from the other side of the coin.

If a sales rep isn't putting in the effort, it is because they don't know what's needed, which is easy to solve through training, or it is because they just don't want it bad enough. In the case of the latter, I always let them know the issue, give them a chance to change and if they don't, they're gone.

Your post makes it very clear on what the issues could be and makes the management of that sales rep (or any employee for that matter) very straight forward and simple without having to figure out if their parents loved them enough, or if they had the right opportunities for the best education, or any number of lousy excuses people create for sub-par performance.

Brilliant Andy!

Kelly, that is really good advice for any company who has separate sales and marketing functions. The other point we probably need to stress is that both groups have a competitive nature. If we don’t focus them on a common enemy (the competition) then they will compete with each other.
